GlaKam Hockey Foundation was recently featured on FOX 9 News, highlighting our mission to introduce the sport of hockey to youth in Kenya and foster global connections through the game.
In a heartfelt segment reported by Maury Glover, FOX 9 shone a spotlight on our founder, James Wainaina Kamau, and his journey from Kenya to Minnesota—the “State of Hockey.” After moving to the U.S. nearly 30 years ago, Kamau and his family embraced the local hockey culture, and that passion inspired him to give back in a meaningful way.
The story shares Kamau’s vision to bring the joy, discipline, and opportunity of hockey to under-resourced communities in Kenya. In 2024, he officially launched the GlaKam Hockey Foundation, which has since begun creating avenues for young people in East Africa and beyond to experience the sport—many for the very first time.
The FOX 9 piece captures the Foundation’s growing impact, including:
Donations of hockey equipment from Minnesota families and teams
Plans for training camps and local tournaments in Kenya
Cultural exchange initiatives connecting African youth with North American players and mentors
A bold dream of building the first full-size ice rink in East Africa
Organizing hockey-themed safari and adventure tournaments in Africa, featuring emerging African hockey-playing nations
“Hockey provides young adults purpose, discipline, a sense of community and opportunity. I want that same opportunity for youth in Kenya and everywhere else in the continent and the world,” Kamau said in the interview.
This coverage is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when sport, culture, and compassion intersect. As we continue to grow, our goal remains clear: empower the next generation of African athletes by blending hockey, heritage, hope and sustainable economic impact.
